Title or most recent registration
Are you still financing your vehicle? Just bring your registration!
If you already have your title, you have the option to bring us the title or your registration. If you turn in the title, you will receive a new title from Texas.
Valid identification (ID / Driver's license / Passport)
* Proof of legal status or citizenship is required when applying for title and registration.
Effective March 5, 2026, the TXDMV has updated the list of acceptable forms of identification for the initial registration of a vehicle in the owner’s name. See the complete list of accepted forms of identification below.
RECENT Emissions Inspection*.
If the sticker on your vehicle is still valid, it is not necessary.

A valid REAL ID or driver's license.
REAL IDs or “Limited Term” licenses are accepted as long as they unexpired.

Valid Texas Concealed Weapons Permit.
Valid U.S. passport.
An ID or driver's license that is not a REAL ID must be accompanied by proof of citizenship (a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. naturalization certificate, or U.S. citizenship certificate is accepted).
A foreign passport is accepted if it is unexpired and accompanied by one of the following:
Current Form I-94; not accepted for parole status.
Valid Permanent Resident Card
A valid immigrant visa issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
If you have proof of legal status in the U.S. but DO NOT HAVE a valid foreign passport, you must obtain a REAL ID.
To obtain a REAL ID in Texas, you must provide the DPS with:
Application for a Texas Driver's License or Original ID Card
Proof of U.S. citizenship or evidence of legal status
Proof of state residency
Proof of Identity: Social Security Number
Proof of insurance for each vehicle you own
Proof of Texas vehicle registration for each vehicle you own (only for new residents who are surrendering a driver’s license from another state)

Yes, as long as the title is properly signed.
If there is no title, we recommend that you draw up a sales contract. It must be signed by both the buyer and the seller and must include the vehicle’s information, details about the buyer and seller, and the terms of the sale (price, date).
